Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit the United States this week for talks with President Donald Trump as the two countries seek to manage tensions over trade, technology, security and wider geopolitical issues.

Beijing confirmed on Monday that Xi will travel to the US from Wednesday to Friday, with China’s Foreign Ministry saying the meeting will focus on major issues affecting bilateral ties and global affairs.

Foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said the two leaders would “have an in-depth exchange of views on major issues concerning China-US relations and world peace and development”.

Guo added that Beijing would “work with the US to enrich the substance of the relationship of constructive strategic stability between China and the US, strengthen dialogue and cooperation, (and) properly manage differences”.

The meeting comes as relations between the world’s two largest economies remain strained despite efforts to maintain communication. Trade disputes, restrictions on technology access and disagreements over Taiwan are expected to feature prominently during the discussions.

A US official confirmed that Trump will personally welcome Xi at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, ahead of their formal talks the following day. The gesture follows a similar diplomatic exchange when Trump arrived in Beijing for a state visit in May and was welcomed by China’s vice president.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said, “I’ll be discussing almost everything with him,” without providing further details.

Trade remains a major issue, with both countries operating under a tariff truce that has lasted nearly a year but has not produced a long-term agreement.

China’s top trade negotiator, Vice Premier He Lifeng, is already in Washington for discussions with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The officials met on Sunday and discussed establishing a communication channel on concerns linked to artificial intelligence.

Beyond economic issues, security concerns are also expected to shape the talks. Taiwan remains a major point of disagreement, while China’s relations with Iran have drawn attention as Washington continues efforts to enforce sanctions against Tehran.

The Xi-Trump meeting is expected to test whether the two sides can maintain dialogue while addressing their deep policy differences.
