Zuma Hits Campaign Trail After Hospital Stay

Former South African President Jacob Zuma made his first public appearance since his October hospitalisation on Sunday, addressing an energetic campaign rally in Durban ahead of upcoming municipal elections.

The 84-year-old political veteran offered no specific details about his health during his 45-minute address, simply reassuring supporters that he had returned to lead the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party’s final campaign push.

The appearance follows an October 7 hospital admission in Pietermaritzburg, which MK officials previously characterised as a routine medical visit.

Addressing a crowd in his key political stronghold of KwaZulu-Natal, Zuma urged voters to reclaim control of the region through the ballot box, where recent polling suggests MK could capture nearly 50 per cent of the vote.

Zuma, who governed South Africa from 2009 until his forced resignation in 2018, continues to exert significant political influence across the country.

Supporters and local candidates expressed renewed confidence following his appearance, viewing his return as a major boost for the party as it aims to consolidate its position as South Africa’s third-largest political force.
