Twelve miners were trapped following an explosion at a mine in central Colombia on Monday, according to updated figures released by regional authorities.
The incident occurred at a legally operated mine in the Sutatausa municipality, about 74 kilometres north of Bogotá, an area where mining accidents are frequently reported, particularly in poorly regulated or illegal sites.
Cundinamarca Governor Jorge Emilio Rey stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that 15 workers were initially caught in the blast, which was believed to have been caused by a buildup of gas underground. He added that three miners managed to escape.
De acuerdo con el último reporte, son 15 los mineros involucrados en el incidente. De ellos, 3 lograron salir por sus propios medios y 1 ya fue trasladado a un centro médico para valoración.

He later clarified that one of the survivors was receiving medical attention, while another two had been assessed as being out of danger.
Rescue operations were ongoing at the site, with emergency teams deployed to the mine entrance as authorities monitored gas levels before attempting further extraction efforts.
Officials said mining incidents in the region are often linked to inadequate ventilation systems, while concerns remain over the presence of illegal operations that do not meet safety standards in surrounding areas.
