Nigeria’s President Buhari proposes ministers over two months after re-election

More than two months after his inauguration, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday submitted a proposed list of government ministers for parliamentary approval, days before lawmakers are to go on recess.   

The delay in providing the list to the Senate, the upper house of the National Assembly, has stoked much speculation. During his first four-year term, which started in 2015, Buhari’s government took six months to come into effect.

The list of ministerial nominees to serve during Buhari’s second and final term as president must be screened and approved by the Senate.

Senate president Ahmed Lawan has said the chamber would not delay its two-month recess, starting Monday, to get Buhari’s government through.

Buhari’s victory in February presidential elections is still being contested in court by Atiku Abubakar, his main challenger from the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
