The Akwa Ibom State Council of Traditional Rulers has conferred President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with the prestigious title of “Otuekong,” the highest traditional honour in the state. The title, which signifies his role as the Commander-in-Chief of Akwa Ibom, was bestowed on him during a ceremony at the State House in Abuja.
Accepting the honour, President Tinubu praised the state’s developmental strides and emphasised the importance of national unity over political affiliations. He reflected on his past connections with Akwa Ibom, recalling his time in Eket as an auditor for Mobil.
“I accept all the honours and the conferment. I am one of you. Going back in time, I recall staying in Eket as an auditor of Mobil. We are all friends and family with the State that has moved progressively, with development and speed.
“I have just signed the 2025 budget. I am happy that the uncertainty over the economy is fading, and hope is rising.
“Thank you for always staying with us. We must work together to build the nation. And to everyone here, you represent and reflect a good society.”
Tinubu also commended Governor Umo Eno for his inclusive leadership, calling him a model for other politicians. He acknowledged the state’s requests for federal support, including a deep-sea port and ecological interventions, and assured collaboration.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised Governor Eno for fostering unity in the state and pledged Akwa Ibom’s continued support for Tinubu’s administration. The governor, in turn, reiterated the state’s commitment to working with the federal government on key infrastructure projects.
The event saw the attendance of a 104-member delegation, including political and religious leaders, former ministers, lawmakers, women, and youth groups.
