The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the Federal High Court of Nigeria, and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) backed civil society initiatives to guarantee transparency ahead of the 2027 general election.
The organisations pledged their support during the inaugural stakeholders’ meeting of the National Electoral Accountability Consortium (NEAC) in Abuja, where civil groups officially launched the Independent Election Results Platform (IERP).
The new digital tool empowers citizens to independently upload and verify polling unit results to prevent manipulation and rebuild public trust.
Speaking through Chief Legal Officer Uzoamaka Ifechi-Fred, NHRC Executive Secretary Dr Tony Ojukwu commended the TAP Initiative and NEAC for developing the project.
Ojukwu said credible elections form the foundation of civil rights, and promised that the commission will work with key partners to safeguard voters and maintain its tradition of election monitoring.
Meanwhile, Tamara Preye, Deputy Chief Registrar of Litigation at the Federal High Court in Abuja, noted that transparent platforms will significantly reduce the heavy volume of pre-election lawsuits currently clogging the judicial system.
Representing APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, Sylvanus Yekpe affirmed the ruling party’s commitment to transparent and peaceful elections, urging community leaders to reject electoral violence.
TAP Initiative Executive Director Martin Obono explained that the IERP provides an open-access backup system for all political parties and citizens if official portals experience failures.
The platform aims to improve Nigeria’s democratic governance and speed up result tracking by establishing a standardised verification mechanism.
