Nice Close in on Marseille with Win at Saint-Etienne

Nice continued their strong run of form with a 3-1 victory over Saint-Etienne on Saturday, drawing level on points with second-placed Marseille in Ligue 1. The win marked a fourth successive triumph for Franck Haise’s side as they maintained their push for a Champions League spot.

Pablo Rosario opened the scoring for Nice, but Saint-Etienne, still reeling from an 8-0 thrashing in the reverse fixture, briefly found hope through Lucas Stassin’s equaliser. Their optimism was short-lived, however, as Mickaël Nadé’s own goal put the visitors back in front early in the second half. Evann Guessand then sealed the win, further deepening Saint-Etienne’s relegation woes.

In another dramatic encounter, Le Havre staged a stunning comeback to defeat Lens 4-3. The hosts initially led 2-0 through Neil El Aynaoui’s penalty and Ruben Aguilar’s strike, but Issa Soumaré and André Ayew restored parity before halftime.

Lens regained the lead when Florian Sotoca found the net, only for Josué Casimir to hit back once again. The final twist came in stoppage time as Ahmed Hassan converted a last-minute penalty to complete Le Havre’s incredible turnaround.

The result plunged Saint-Etienne into the relegation zone, while Le Havre climbed further clear of danger.

Meanwhile, Marseille, now under pressure from Nice, will host Nantes on Sunday as they look to bounce back from a humbling 3-0 defeat to Auxerre. Their preparations have been overshadowed by off-field controversy, with club president Pablo Longoria beginning a 15-match ban after accusing officials of “corruption.”

With the battle for European places heating up, Marseille must respond swiftly to avoid slipping further behind in the race for a top-two finish.
