American Swimmer Breaks 50 Metre Freestyle World Record Twice

American swimmer Kate Douglass has broken the women’s 50-metre freestyle world record twice in one day, winning gold at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California.

Douglass clocked 23.19 seconds in the final, improving the world record of 23.49 seconds she had set just hours earlier during the heats.

Her latest swim also erased the 23.55-second record set by fellow American Gretchen Walsh on June 28 in Rome.

Walsh finished second in 23.74 seconds, while Australia’s reigning world champion Meg Harris took bronze in 23.89 seconds.

The record has changed hands several times in recent months.

Walsh had broken Douglass’ previous world record, set on June 19, before Douglass reclaimed the mark in Saturday’s heats.

Douglass had little time to celebrate her record-breaking performance, leaving the pool deck to prepare for the 200m breaststroke final on the final day of the four-day Pan Pacific Championships.

The competition brings together leading swimmers from countries outside Europe.
