Shelling by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killed five children and wounded four women in the capital of North Darfur, El-Fasher, on Wednesday, a medical source confirmed.
The attack, which targeted civilian neighbourhoods, was reported by the Sudanese army, which has been engaged in conflict with the RSF since April 2023.
El-Fasher, the only state capital in Darfur not under RSF control, has been besieged by the group since May.
The fighting has intensified recently as the RSF attempts to solidify its control over the region.
The army has repelled RSF attacks on the city, but the paramilitary group has retaliated by shelling nearby displacement camps, which are already facing famine conditions.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan has led to tens of thousands of deaths, displaced over 12 million people, and caused the largest hunger crisis in the world.
In North Darfur, nearly 1.7 million people are displaced, with approximately two million facing extreme food insecurity.
Famine has already affected three displacement camps near El-Fasher, and further spread is expected by May.
