Women Affairs Minister Gives Cash, Home to GBV Survivor

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Suleiman Ibrahim, on Friday presented a ₦1 million cheque and a fully furnished apartment for two years to a survivor of gender-based violence (GBV) and her mother, Rebecca Isong.

The presentation took place at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Abuja, where the minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting survivors of abuse and restoring dignity to victims of gender-based crimes.

She said that the Ministry of Women Affairs stands firmly with every survivor of gender-based violence and will ensure that healing, safety, and hope are not just promises—but realities.

The financial and housing support package is part of a broader initiative by the Ministry to provide sustainable rehabilitation for survivors of GBV, many of whom face homelessness, trauma, and economic vulnerability after escaping abusive situations.

The survivor, whose name is withheld for privacy reasons, appeared visibly emotional during the ceremony. Her mother, Rebecca Isong, expressed profound gratitude to the Minister and her team, describing the gesture as a lifeline for their family.

The apartment, located in a secure and accessible part of Abuja, comes fully furnished and includes living essentials aimed at helping the survivor and her mother rebuild their lives with dignity.

The initiative, according to Minister Ibrahim, will be expanded to cover more survivors as the Ministry intensifies efforts to implement the National Gender-Based Violence Response Plan and work with state governments, NGOs, and international partners to eliminate GBV in Nigeria.
