Carlo Ancelotti has admitted he would have no issue if Real Madrid decide to part ways with him, following their heavy Champions League quarter-final defeat to Arsenal.
The reigning European champions were knocked out on Wednesday night after a 2-1 home loss at the Santiago Bernabeu, sealing a 5-1 aggregate defeat against the Premier League side. It was Madrid’s 12th defeat of the season — a stark contrast to the mere two losses they suffered during the entirety of the previous campaign.
Speaking after the match, Ancelotti struck a calm and reflective tone when asked about his future at the club. “It could be that the club decide to change coach — it could be this year or next, when my contract expires. There’s no problem,” the 65-year-old said. “The day I leave here, I can only thank the club. Whether it’s tomorrow, in 10 days, in a month or a year — if my contract is up or not, I don’t care.”
Despite his composed response, speculation is mounting over who could replace the Italian, with former Real midfielder and current Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso reportedly on the shortlist, alongside ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
Ancelotti, who returned to Madrid in 2021 for a second stint, has enjoyed success at the helm but has come under scrutiny amid recent struggles, particularly in European competition.
Following the defeat to Arsenal, Ancelotti admitted his side lacked the cutting edge needed to break down their opponents. “The team gave everything in terms of attitude, but we weren’t able to do it,” he said. “To be honest, Arsenal defended very well. We found it hard to find space. In terms of intensity we were better, but it was not enough.”
Despite their Champions League exit, Madrid remain in the hunt for other trophies. They are still competing in La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and will feature in the FIFA Club World Cup this summer. Ancelotti will be hoping to secure at least one piece of silverware this season — but whether he’ll still be at the helm beyond then remains to be seen.
