Nigeria’s Former First Lady Patience Jonathan Earns PhD

Patience Jonathan, the wife of former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, has obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Psychology, Guidance, and Counselling from Ignatius Ajuru University of Education.

Speaking during the institution’s 43rd Postgraduate Convocation Ceremony held on Saturday, the former First Lady used the moment to advocate for lifelong learning, particularly among Nigerian women and young people.

In a statement issued by her media adviser, Chris Okeke, on Sunday, June 1, Jonathan described her academic milestone as proof that age should not be a limitation to personal growth or educational aspirations.

”I feel that no age is too late to achieve your academic dreams, whether you are young or old. If I can do it, you can also do it. I believe that even in retirement, you are not too old to go back to school because education provides the opportunity for one to always refresh his or her brain and learn new things.

“Let me use this opportunity to encourage Nigerian women and the youth to aspire to become the best of themselves through qualitative education.”

She urged Nigerians, especially women and youth, to invest in their education and strive to become the best version of themselves through quality learning.

Jonathan dedicated her PhD to Nigerian women and reaffirmed her ongoing commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of women, children, and other vulnerable groups in society. She pledged to continue her work in promoting social development and inclusive dialogue.

Reflecting on her journey to academic success, she expressed gratitude to God and thanked her family for their steadfast support throughout the programme.

“I also thank my family sincerely, especially my lovely husband, His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for all his support and very useful suggestions.

“I am also very grateful to my beautiful children for showing great understanding and love throughout the period I was engaged in this programme.

“I appreciate all my friends for their encouragement. I feel very happy today.”

Patience Jonathan described the moment as one of great personal joy and fulfilment.
