Tinubu Commissions Landmark 180MW Power Plant in Rivers

President Bola Tinubu officially launched the 180MW Afam II Power Plant in Oyigbo, Rivers State, on Wednesday. The facility was developed by Sahara Power Group, Africa’s largest private power company, in conjunction with Crescendough Nigeria Limited, highlighting the essential role of private sector partnerships in advancing sustainable energy solutions within the nation.

The project, which mainly utilised Nigerian talent, was designed, executed, and completed within 16 months by Sahara Power Group, a branch of the global energy and infrastructure enterprise Sahara Group, along with Crescendough Nigeria Limited.

During a virtual inauguration from Lagos, Tinubu referred to the initiative as a significant enhancement to the national grid and a vital step in the country’s quest to increase energy accessibility. He said the fully functional plant would provide electricity to households, businesses, and industries, fostering economic growth.

Describing the project as a “key achievement emanating from the enterprising Nigerian spirit,” the President stated that the plant’s completion demonstrates Nigeria’s ability to tackle challenges through collaboration, perseverance, and renewed optimism. He also praised the Rivers State Government for its foresight and support in facilitating the project to achieve energy sustainability.

In his earlier address, Kola Adesina, the Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, remarked that Sahara has been a key player in Africa’s energy and infrastructure sector for almost thirty years. He underscored the company’s dedication to teamwork and shared goals in providing sustainable energy solutions.

Adesina stressed that the Afam II project would promote productivity in Nigeria by generating employment, fostering industrial advancement, and ensuring sustainable development.
