MACBAN: Benue Crisis is Criminality, Not Farmer-Herder Clash

The Secretary of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Benue State, Ibrahim Galfi, has decried the worsening security situation in parts of the state, saying that what began as isolated clashes has now escalated into outright criminality, beyond the familiar farmer-herder disputes.

Speaking during News Central’s Town Hall conversation on the Benue crisis, Galfi acknowledged the efforts of both the Benue State government and federal security agencies in attempting to restore peace. However, he warned that criminal elements had hijacked the situation, particularly in areas such as Tarka and Buruku.

“Many communities in Benue State, the government of Benue State and the federal government have tried their best to protect and save lives. We recognise their efforts, and the federal security who are doing their most to ensure peace reigns,” he said.

He was quick to clarify that the violence was no longer driven by legitimate farmers or herders, noting that friendly relations still exist between the two communities in many parts of the state.

“These attacks were perpetrated by criminal elements, not ordinary farmers. There’s still a relationship between farmers and herders in Benue,” he explained.

Galfi called for a “collaborative approach” as the lasting solution to the crisis and also proposed that local governments and security outfits conduct a comprehensive survey to correctly identify herder families in each area, enabling better monitoring and reintegration.

Reiterating MACBAN’s position, Galfi stressed: “This is no longer a farmer-herder issue. I agree with that 100%. It’s pure criminality now. What we are advocating is for all stakeholders — government, security, farmers, and herders — to come together in real collaboration to face the situation.”

His remarks come as Benue continues to grapple with violent attacks in rural communities, with increasing calls for practical, inclusive peace-building measures beyond the courtroom and security checkpoints.
