The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a police officer and a university student over alleged involvement in cult-related activities during a signing-out ceremony for final-year students at the University of Port Harcourt.

In a statement released on Friday, October 3,  Police Public Relations Officer Grace Iringe-Koko said the suspects — Police Corporal Onwukwe Godswill, attached to Elimgbu Division, and 200-level Biomedical Technology student Ifeanyi Israel — were apprehended on September 26, 2025, by the university’s internal security team while preparing for a possible clash with a rival cult group on campus.

During an initial search, officers recovered pistols, ammunition, and axes from the suspects.

A subsequent raid on Corporal Onwukwe’s residence led to the discovery of additional weapons, including a locally made pistol and two machetes.

The police confirmed that the suspects and the seized exhibits are in custody as investigations continue to uncover the extent of their activities and any possible accomplices.

Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to public safety, warning that there would be “no hiding place for criminals” in Rivers State.

He also urged residents to promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.

The arrest follows another high-profile incident last week, when police detained a security guard known as Godday for allegedly abducting and defiling a 14-year-old girl in the Trans-Amadi area of Port Harcourt.
