The Armed Forces of Nigeria announced on Saturday that they had arrested 16 officers for alleged acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the misconduct stemmed largely from frustration over repeated failures in promotion examinations and concerns about stalled career advancement.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, said the behaviour of the officers fell short of the standards expected within the military. He added that some of the suspects were already under investigation for various offences and were either on trial or awaiting court proceedings.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria informs the public that a routine military exercise has led to the arrest of sixteen officers for indiscipline and violations of service regulations,” the statement read. “Investigations show their grievances were mainly linked to perceived career stagnation due to repeated promotion exam failures and other issues.
“Some of the arrested officers were already under jurisdiction for other offences and awaiting trial. Their conduct was deemed incompatible with the values of military service.”
Gusau confirmed that those found guilty would face full disciplinary procedures in line with established military regulations to ensure accountability and uphold professionalism.
He stressed that the arrests were purely disciplinary and part of ongoing efforts to maintain order, discipline, and loyalty within the ranks. “The Armed Forces will not tolerate behaviour that undermines the institution’s integrity or threatens its constitutional responsibilities under democratic authority,” he added.
“The military remains fully committed to its constitutional duties and will continue to operate professionally at all times.”
