South African musician Khuzani Mpungose secured the prestigious Best Independent Artist (African) award at the Hollywood and African Prestigious Awards (HAPA) in Los Angeles.
This major international recognition is a significant triumph for the maskandi genre, affirming the global appreciation for this culturally rooted music from South Africa.
Khuzani emphasised that the award is a “blessing and a responsibility,” validating the history and identity of the Zulu people and the maskandi movement.

His success proves that artists rooted in traditional, authentic cultural and linguistic identity can thrive on the world stage, resonating with global audiences who seek real stories and lived experiences in music.
The win further positions maskandi alongside other prominent African genres and will be celebrated by fans at a homecoming event on November 8.
