An angry mob on Friday set fire to a property on George Akume Way in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, after suspected stolen motorcycles and other items were found inside.

The discovery triggered heavy traffic gridlock as commercial motorcyclists (Okada riders) blocked major roads, insisting that security agencies reveal the identity of the property owner.

The items were uncovered after a joint effort between the police and a motorcycle owner who used a tracker to trace his stolen bike to the building. When the owner confirmed that his motorcycle was inside, he alerted fellow Okada riders.

In the company of police officers, they stormed the premises and found several motorcycles, sewing machines, and grinding machines believed to have been stolen.

Police officers immediately moved the recovered motorcycles to the E Division Police Station in Makurdi.

Outraged by the discovery, the Okada riders barricaded the busy George Akume Way and demanded that officers vacate the premises so they could burn it down.

The police have since urged anyone whose motorcycle, sewing machine, grinding machine, or other household items were stolen to visit the E Division Police Station in Wurukum, Makurdi, to file a report.
