Supporters of Peter Obi, known as the Obidient Movement, have said they will not back him as a vice-presidential candidate, insisting their support is solely for his bid to become Nigeria’s president.

The Obidient Movement issued the clarification following public reactions to comments made by its national coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, during an interview on Channels Television.

In that interview, Tanko was quoted as saying the movement would remain within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and respect the outcome of the party’s presidential primary, even if former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerged as the party’s candidate.

However, in another statement on Saturday by Tanko himself, the Obidient Movement described the report as “deliberate misrepresentations and malicious propaganda.”

“The Obidient Movement is not mobilised to support Mr Peter Obi as a vice-presidential candidate to anyone. Our support is exclusively for his emergence as President of Nigeria,” the statement said.

The group said it is currently supporting Obi within the ADC as he seeks the party’s presidential ticket and would accept the outcome of the process if it is transparent and credible, and that it would take a collective decision if the process is compromised.

“At present, we are supporting him within the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the contest for its presidential candidacy. Should the process be transparent, credible, and fair, the Obidient Movement will abide by its outcome.

“However, should the process be compromised, the Movement will take a united, lawful, and democratic decision consistent with its core principles.”

The Obidient Movement also noted that its support for Obi is not tied to any political party but to his leadership vision.

“Crucially, wherever Mr Peter Obi, acting within the law and guided by conscience, chooses to pursue his presidential mandate, the Obidient Movement will move with him.

“Our loyalty is to his leadership vision and to Nigeria’s national redemption—not to political convenience or compromised platforms.”

Describing itself as “an organic, nationwide, and values-driven democratic movement,” the Obidient Movement said its sole objective is the emergence of credible leadership in Nigeria through lawful and democratic means.

“Our singular purpose is the emergence of the right leadership for Nigeria through lawful and democratic means.”
