Nigeria’s Presidential Tax Reform Committee chairman, Taiwo Oyedele, has dismissed reports that the government has stopped issuing guidelines for the implementation of new tax laws.
Oyedele was responding to a Daily Trust report titled “FG pauses on tax laws guidelines, cites uncertainty” that claimed he had asked tax agencies to delay releasing the guidelines because of uncertainty over the final version of the laws.
The report said Oyedele made the remarks after giving a speech at an economic event organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria in Lagos.
It claimed he told the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) “to wait because guidelines for implementing tax laws cannot be issued.”
Daily Trust also reported that ” Oyedele said concerns about whether the documents currently in circulation represent the final version of the laws prompted him to instruct his team to purchase a printed copy of the law from the government’s printer.”
“He said the feedback from his staff revealed that the National Assembly had taken custody of all printed copies of the tax laws and directed that they should not be sold or made available to the public until lawmakers conclude their review,” the report added.
However, Oyedele dismissed the report, describing it as false.
In a brief post on X, he wrote “Fake news!” alongside a screenshot of the story.
Oyedele, however, did not provide further details.
