The Abba I Primary Health Centre in Nwangele LGA, Imo State, has been abandoned and rendered non-functional, denying residents access to quality healthcare.
A civil society organisation (CSO), MonITNG, revealed the appalling condition of the PHC in a statement shared on X on Wednesday. The images attached to the post depict a grim scene: a structure built to save lives, slowly rotting away in abandonment.
“The Tracka team tracked this project and uncovered a disturbing reality. Abba I Primary Health Centre in Nwangele LGA, Imo State, though newly constructed with public funds, is completely non-functional and abandoned. When they visited the facility, it was locked and covered in dust,” the statement read in part.

According to the CSO, the PHC’s ceilings are already falling, floors are broken, and the eight wards are deteriorating. It added that the centre lacks electricity, water, medical equipment, and health workers to care for patients.
The abandoned PHC has left many residents without access to healthcare. In 2025, a pregnant woman had to travel to a neighbouring community after visiting the facility and finding no healthcare workers available when she needed care.

“This is the harsh reality residents face despite having a “completed” health centre in their community. This is not just about a building. It is about access to healthcare, maternal safety, and responsible use of public resources. Communities should not suffer while public projects meant to serve them lie idle,” MonITNG noted.
The CSO also urged the state governor, Hope Uzodimma, to investigate why the PHC remains nonfunctional and to hold those responsible accountable.
