Atiku Regrets Co-Founding the APC

Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reflected on his role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress in 2024, saying he now regrets being a founding member of the party.

“I regret being among those who helped form the APC in 2014 to remove Goodluck Jonathan from office. Today, the situation has become even worse under the present administration,” Atiku said.

He made this statement during a press conference organised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Thursday.

The APC, which is now Nigeria’s ruling party, was a merger of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). The founding members saw it as a political tool to unseat Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Reflecting on the series of events that transpired during that period, Atiku said the founding members of the APC formed the party in 2014 because they felt Nigeria’s democracy was flawed.

“But with a note of caution, you see, we did this exercise in 2014. Not so, we came together and formed APC because we felt democracy was faulty in 2014,” said Atiku.

“Only for us to end up at the same position we found ourselves in 2014. It was because, in 2014, the major challenges were insecurity here and there, the economy, and so on. Now it is even worse than what we fought in 2014.”
