The Governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris, on Saturday night supervised the evacuation of about 140 schoolchildren following a fire outbreak at Nooroh-Haq School in Birnin Kebbi.
According to the governor, he and members of his convoy were driving past the area when he noticed smoke rising from the school premises. Initially, he assumed it was from burning tyres but stopped after realising the smoke was coming from a school building.
“We were just passing by when I saw smoke coming out of the area. At first, I thought it was smoke from burning tyres. But after taking a closer look, I realised it was a school, and we immediately stopped to supervise the evacuation of the pupils,” he told journalists at the scene.

Governor Idris said the school had over 140 pupils, all of whom were successfully evacuated to a safer location within the state capital.
He added that the presence of gas cylinders inside the school complicated the fire service’s efforts to extinguish the blaze.

The governor and his team reportedly remained at the scene until the fire was completely extinguished, even breaking their fast there.

He confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident.
Governor Idris also directed the immediate constitution of a high-powered committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire outbreak.
