Donald Trump said on Sunday that 48 Iranian leaders had been killed in the ongoing US-Israeli bombardment of Iran, describing the military campaign as “very positive”.

“Nobody can believe the success we’re having; 48 leaders are gone in one shot. And it’s moving along rapidly,” Trump was quoted as saying in an interview with Fox News.

He asserted that the offensive—launched on Saturday with the stated aim of dismantling the Islamic Republic’s leadership and crippling its armed forces—was progressing successfully. Iran has confirmed the death of its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“We’re doing our job not just for us but for the world. And everything is ahead of schedule,” Trump said in a separate interview with CNBC.

“Things are evolving in a very positive way right now, a very positive way,” he added.

The interviews took place before the US military announced its first casualties of the conflict. Three unidentified service personnel were reported killed, five seriously injured, and several others sustained lighter wounds.

The Israeli army also declared the deaths of forty senior Iranian officials, while official Iranian media have reported the deaths of three members of Khamenei’s family and confirmed the identities of six high-ranking individuals killed during a Defence Council meeting.

Meanwhile, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American forces had sunk an Iranian warship while it was docked in the Gulf of Oman.
