Blasts were heard in Doha early on Saturday, according to AFP journalists, after the interior ministry announced the evacuation of several key areas as a precaution.

Interceptors were seen over the Qatari capital’s city centre bringing down two projectiles, an AFP journalist reported, as Iran continues its retaliatory air campaign across Gulf states.

The Qatar Ministry of Defence later confirmed that its forces had “intercepted missile attack which targeted State of Qatar”.

Earlier, the Qatar Ministry of Interior said in a statement it was “evacuating several key areas as a temporary precautionary measure, within the framework of ensuring public safety until the danger has passed”.

In Doha’s central Msheireb Downtown Doha district, some residents received phone alerts instructing them to “evacuate the area immediately… to the nearest safest place as a temporary precaution”.

Security personnel were deployed across the central district, with several streets cordoned off.

The oil-rich Gulf region has borne the brunt of Tehran’s retaliation following strikes by the United States and Israel that triggered the ongoing Middle East conflict, with Iranian attacks targeting American assets as well as civilian infrastructure.
