A 39-year-old Ugandan man,  Christopher Okello Onyum, who was arrested for killing four children in a kindergarten in Uganda, has confessed to killing them as human sacrifices.

According to prosecutors, the defendant said he intended to use the children as human sacrifices because he believed it would make him wealthy. Onyum reportedly gained access to the kindergarten by posing as a parent before attacking them with a knife. Four children between the ages of 15 months and two and a half years old died.

The news infuriated Ugandans, and an angry mob in Uganda threatened to lynch him before he was arrested.

According to Africanews, the charge read in court said Onyum “recorded a charge and caution statement wherein he confessed to killing all the deceased children”. A medical assessment of him found him to be of sound mind, with “normal” thought processes.

“A medical assessment has confirmed that the accused is mentally fit to stand trial,” prosecutors said.

The charge also explained the killings as a means of “fortune hunting or enrichment”. Victims’ relatives present for the hearing jeered at the Onyum, but he did not react.

Onyum attacked children in a kindergarten for “malnourished and vulnerable children” aged between three months and three years.

The prosecutor’s office said the evidence in the case will show that Onyum carefully planned the attack for several days before launching the attack on the kindergarten and killing the children.

Uganda’s army chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is the son of President Yoweri Museveni, said the government will push for his death sentence.

Onyum was remanded in custody pending his trial, for which no date has yet been set.
