The Lagos State Government has announced a new plan to use artificial intelligence, data analytics, and other digital tools to improve school monitoring and registration.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, said the plan aims to improve how schools are managed and make the education system more efficient.

A key part of the plan is to move private school registration online. This will allow school owners to apply for approval without visiting government offices.

Alli-Balogun said the goal is to make the system easier and reduce delays.

“The overall objective is about improving the performance of schools in the education governance of Lagos State,” Alli-Balogun said.

“First and foremost, we are automating the private school registration system. We do not want school owners to go through the stress of coming down to the ministry before applying for approvals.

They should be able to do that from the comfort of their homes.”

The commissioner added that the reforms will also help improve how education quality officers work, through better training and the use of technology.

He said the changes will not happen all at once because new equipment, training, and systems are needed.

“You cannot expect everything to fall into place in one day. Automation requires new ICT infrastructure, personnel, and training for evaluators to key into the new system,” he added.

The Director-General of the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, said the plan was developed after reviewing system problems, including manual recordkeeping and weak coordination between agencies.

“We realised that a lot of things are done manually. That was one of the biggest weaknesses we identified. So, we decided to come up with a strategic document that is going to transform the way we work in OEQA,” Ogunmuyiwa said.

He said Lagos has more than 1,400 public schools, about two million students, and over 160,000 teachers under its education system.

According to him, the new plan will focus on digitising school approval, registration, and monitoring processes, as well as improving staff training and data use.

He added that the reforms have already started with staff training and the creation of a team to handle implementation.

Ogunmuyiwa said the changes are being documented so they can continue even if leadership changes.

He also warned staff against poor conduct and urged them to support the new system.

The government said the reforms will make school monitoring easier, reduce delays, and improve the quality of education in Lagos State.
