Nigerian soldiers have foiled an ambush by suspected Boko Haram terrorists along the Buni Gari-Buratai road in Borno State.
Troops from the 27 Task Force Brigade, under Operation HADIN KAI, came under attack at about 10:45 am on Monday while operating along the route.
Acting Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North East, Captain Mohammed Goni, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday. Goni said one Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device (IED), damaging two tyres.
He said troops later searched the ambush site and recovered an AK-47 magazine, 30 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, two RPG bombs, one motorcycle and two bicycles.
No casualties were recorded during the attack, Goni said. He added that troops had continued operations to dominate the area and prevent terrorists from moving freely.
In a separate development, four family members of suspected terrorists, including an eight-month-old infant, have surrendered to troops in Borno State.
The group surrendered at about 1:35 pm on Sunday, along the Gwoza-Limankara road.
Military sources said preliminary investigations showed that the group escaped from the Hiduwa terrorist enclave in the Mandara Mountains, Gwoza Local Government Area. The sources said the individuals told troops that a lack of basic necessities in the enclave forced them to flee and seek safety. The four individuals and the infant are currently undergoing screening and further investigation in military custody.
Meanwhile, troops of the 19 Battalion under 25 Brigade have safely detonated an IED planted along the Damboa-Bulabulin-Maiduguri road. The explosive was discovered at about 12:07 pm on Monday during a patrol and escort operation for civilian vehicles.
Troops found the device around Asorok, shortly before Bulabulin, where suspected terrorists had buried it. The area was secured before the IED was safely detonated, preventing possible casualties and damage to vehicles using the road. Troops later continued their movement towards the Kumala checkpoint.
Also, troops of the 25 Brigade, working with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), have arrested a suspected foreign national along the Azir-Damboa road. The suspect was arrested at about 5:55 pm on Saturday, following information from residents about a suspected foreigner moving along the route.
During preliminary questioning, he reportedly identified himself as a Cameroonian. The suspect allegedly told troops he entered Nigeria through Taraba State and was travelling to Niger State in search of artisanal work but lost his way.
He remains in military custody while authorities investigate his identity, travel history and presence in the area.
