Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Babachir Lawal, has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Nigerian Government is attempting to establish a one-party system in Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Lawal claimed the ruling party would struggle to win a free and fair election and was therefore seeking to remain in power without meaningful opposition.
“They want a one-party system. Look, it is very clear, every Nigerian understands that this government cannot afford to go to an election in a free and fair manner because they will lose woefully,” he said.
When asked whether the ADC had opinion polls supporting his assertion, Lawal said the party had such data but would not disclose it publicly as it was internal.
The ADC has recently been in dispute with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing its chairman of bias against the party.
This follows INEC’s decision to withdraw recognition of the David Mark-led National Working Committee and other factions, pending the outcome of a court case.
Despite this, the ADC went ahead with its congresses and held its national convention on Tuesday, which Lawal described as successful despite alleged attempts to frustrate it.
Although INEC did not observe the convention, Lawal maintained that the exercise remains valid, saying the party acted on legal advice and would still participate in the 2027 elections regardless of the commission’s position.
“We don’t listen to INEC. They are not the Appeal Court, they are not the Supreme Court, not even the High Court,” he said, insisting the party would be on the ballot.
He also claimed the ADC has solutions to Nigeria’s challenges but stressed that its immediate priority is to remove the APC from power.
“First thing first, we have the solution… But first thing first, stop this government from continuing with what they have started,” he added.
