Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Benin Republic’s President-Elect Romuald Wadagni on his victory.
The 49-year-old is the country’s current finance minister. He contested the just-concluded election with the country’s Vice President, Mariam Chabi Talata, as his running mate. He contested against Paul Hounkpe and won by a landslide, securing 94% of the votes.
Prior to the election, some Beninese people said the election would be a walkover for Wadagni because he is President Patrice Talon’s “annointed candidate” and a member of the ruling party.
Tinubu, in a letter, said Wadagni’s victory reflects the trust Beninese citizens placed in his vision and his record as the country’s finance minister.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I extend my warmest congratulations to you on your election as the President of the Republic of Benin following the polls held on April 12, 2026,” said Tinubu.

“I commend the Government and people of the Benin Republic for conducting a peaceful election and noted that Wadagni’s victory reflects the trust the people have placed in his vision and record of service as the current Minister of Finance.
“This transition marks a significant chapter in your nation’s history. I therefore commend the people of Benin for their resilience and commitment to the democratic process and to maintaining peace during the election cycle.”
Nigeria is widely regarded as a dominant force in West Africa, owing to its economic strength, population size, and regional political influence. When Talon’s administration was threatened by a coup attempt in December 2025, Nigeria sent troops to assist in foiling the plot.
As neighbours, both countries share a long history of diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties. In his letter, Tinubu said he looked forward to working with Wadagni to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Benin.
Tinubu also extended his good wishes to Wadagni for a successful tenure as president.
“As you prepare to assume the onerous responsibilities of the high office of the Presidency, I wish you great wisdom, fortitude, and success. You can please rest assured of my unstinting support and cooperation in this regard,” Tinubu added.
