The Nigerian government has clarified that former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and former Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, stepped down from their positions on their own accord before President Bola Tinubu announced cabinet changes.

In a statement on Wednesday signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, it was explained that both ministers submitted their resignations independently ahead of the Federal Executive Council reshuffle.

According to the statement, Edun, who turned 70 on Monday and had reportedly been unwell, formally communicated his decision in a letter submitted on his birthday, in which he expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve.

In the letter, he was quoted as saying, “it had been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

He further stated that Nigeria had, under Tinubu’s leadership, “ emerged stronger, more resilient and more internationally respected, ” while wishing the administration continued success.

The statement also noted that Edun later visited the Presidential Villa on Tuesday for a private engagement with the President before proceeding on his exit to attend to personal health concerns.

Similarly, Dangiwa was said to have also stepped aside voluntarily, thanking the President for the opportunity to serve in the cabinet.

According to the statement,  the president expressed appreciation to both former ministers, commending their roles in economic management and housing reforms, which he described as important to ongoing policy direction.

Following their departure, the President has directed the Finance Minister, Taiwo Oyedele, to strengthen ongoing reforms and drive fiscal policy with greater discipline and focus.

The Presidency also confirmed that a nominee for the Housing and Urban Development portfolio, Muttaqha Rabe Darma, will be submitted to the Senate for confirmation.

The developments come after an earlier announcement of adjustments within the Federal Executive Council.
