Nigeria has begun producing “next-generation dual-active ingredient insecticide-treated” mosquito nets locally, with a new factory in the country expected to roll out about 10 million nets annually and create over 600 jobs.
Health Textiles Nigeria FZE, owned by Swiss company Vestergaard Sàrl, is Nigeria’s first facility to manufacture dual-active-ingredient nets.
It will produce PermaNet Dual, a mosquito net designed to counter growing insecticide resistance and prequalified by the World Health Organisation in 2023.
The project stems from a 2024 agreement between Vestergaard and the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain, aimed at boosting domestic production of essential health products.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Muhammad Ali Pate said the factory’s launch reflects what can be achieved when government policy, private investment and technology transfer work together.
“This investment demonstrates what is possible when government policy, private-sector investment and technology transfer come together to unlock Nigeria’s healthcare value chain,” Pate said.
“The commencement of local production also strengthens our capacity to produce essential health products and supports a more resilient health system,” he added.
The National Coordinator of PVAC, Abdu Mukhtar, said the initiative showed how investment and policy could translate into industrial capacity and skills development, adding that the model should be replicated across other segments of the healthcare value chain.
About 80 employees have already been recruited and are being trained in manufacturing standards, product quality, occupational health and safety, and regulatory compliance. The company expects to fulfil its first commercial orders in the coming months.
The development comes as Nigeria continues to bear a substantial share of the global malaria burden.
WHO estimates that malaria caused 282 million cases and 610,000 deaths globally in 2024, with the African Region accounting for the overwhelming majority of cases and deaths.
With production now underway, Health Textiles Nigeria is expected to fulfil its first commercial orders in the coming months, expanding Nigeria’s capacity to produce this critical malaria-prevention commodity locally.
