The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has commended the United States (US) for facilitating an extension of the ceasefire of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon.

US President Donald Trump announced a three-week extension of a truce between Israel and Lebanon after a meeting at the White House on Thursday.

Trump hosted Israel’s ambassador to Washington, Yechiel Leiter, and Lebanese ambassador to the US, Nada Moawad, in the Oval Office for a second round of US-facilitated talks, a day after Israeli strikes killed at least five people, including a journalist.

“I welcome the announcement of a three-week extension to the cessation of hostilities arrangement to enable dialogue between Lebanon & Israel, and commend the role of the US in facilitating the extension. Everyone must fully respect the cessation of hostilities, cease any further attacks & comply with their obligations under international law,” he wrote.

“I call on Hizbullah & other non-State actors to abide by the decisions of Lebanon to extend its authority throughout its territory & advance the exclusive control of arms by the State. I call on Israel to withdraw completely from north of the Blue Line. I hope that this agreement will contribute to ongoing efforts toward a lasting & comprehensive peace in the region.
