The Oyo State Government has confirmed five cases of Lassa fever in the state, with one death.
The state’s commissioner for health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, said the confirmed Lassa fever cases are being managed in isolation and treatment facilities, including the state’s Infectious Disease Centre (IDC), Olodo, and the University College Hospital (UCH) isolation unit.
According to Ajetunmobi, the Oyo State Government has activated its emergency response framework and initiated a coordinated multi-sectoral intervention in line with national guidelines from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and global standards set by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The commissioner added that environmental sanitation, fumigation, and decontamination of affected areas are ongoing across the state, while sensitisation of healthcare workers is ongoing.
A 44-year-old woman who was treated at the University College Hospital in Ibadan, the state’s capital, died on April 11, 2026, with laboratory results later confirming Lassa fever on April 13, 2026.
Lassa fever is a viral disease transmitted mainly through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected rodents and can also spread between humans through bodily fluids, particularly in healthcare settings without proper infection control.
