Two migrants have died while attempting to cross the English Channel from Northern France to the United Kingdom, officials said on Sunday.

According to a regional official, Christophe Marx, the victims, two women, were among 82 people on a small boat that ran aground on a beach at Neufchatel-Hardelot, located south of the port of  Boulogne.

Marx added that the vessel became stranded along the shoreline during the attempted crossing.

The latest incident brings the number of migrant deaths on the Channel route this year to at least eight, following 29 fatalities recorded in similar crossings last year.

Authorities in France and the UK recently agreed on a three-year security arrangement to curb the dangerous journeys, with increased coastal patrols on the French side and additional financial support from Britain, according to an AFP tally based on official French and British sources.

According to French officials,  migrant arrivals in the UK so far this year have declined compared to the same period in 2025.
