The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has introduced a new Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system for all taxable persons in the country.

The agency, in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), announced the update in a public notice posted on its X handle on Monday. The new system is supported by Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which requires every taxable person to obtain a Tax ID.

According to the NRS, the new system will strengthen tax administration, improve transparency, and reorganise service delivery across national and sub-national tax structures. The agency said that the Tax ID will serve as a unified identity for all taxpayers nationwide.

The NRS notice states, “The Tax ID will serve as a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels. It is designed to consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, and ensure more efficient management of tax-related information”.

The NRS also said that the new system will improve transparency and accountability in tax collection, simplify tax processes like registration, filing, and payment. It added that the Tax ID framework will unify taxpayer information across all levels of government.

“The initiative will simplify tax compliance processes, including registration, tax filing, and payment procedures. The system will improve transparency by enabling better visibility and tracking of taxpayer records while reducing leakages and improving accountability in tax collection. The framework will also harmonise taxpayer information across all levels of government,” the NRS added.

Furthermore, the agency noted that the new Tax ID system will replace the Tax Identification Number (TIN) Validation API, which is currently used by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), financial institutions, and other organisations.

Following this new update, all organisations requiring integration or validation services for individuals, enterprises, and business names to are required to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the JRB for access to the new API and integration guidelines.

Organisations handling corporate entity validation have also been advised to contact the NRS Tax Automation Department.
