At least four people lost their lives, and six others sustained injuries following the overnight collapse of a four-storey building in the Moroccan city of Fez, local authorities confirmed on Thursday.

The disaster prompted a major emergency response in the city, which sits roughly 200 kilometres east of the capital, Rabat.

While state media outlet 2M initially reported a significantly higher death toll of 11 individuals, they subsequently issued an official correction to align with the figures provided by emergency services.

Rescue teams and residents have spent hours digging through the structural debris as the search remains active for any additional victims who might still be trapped underneath the rubble.

In the wake of the tragedy, municipal authorities launched a formal investigation to determine the underlying cause of the structural failure.

As an immediate safety precaution against potential secondary collapses, occupants living in adjacent properties were ordered to evacuate their homes.

This deadly incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding structural safety in Fez, an ancient former capital founded in the eighth century that now ranks as Morocco’s third-largest city.

The municipality has been plagued by similar structural failures in recent months.

Notably, a catastrophic incident occurred just last December when the simultaneous collapse of two buildings in the city resulted in at least 22 fatalities.
