The vice president will play an active role in governance and not be relegated to a ceremonial position if he wins the 2027 presidential election, Nigeria Democratic Congress candidate Peter Obi has said.

Obi made the pledge on Saturday while formally accepting his party’s nomination and unveiling former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.

“I will make democracy work, and the Vice President will be a partner, not a spare tyre,” Obi wrote on his X platform.

The former Anambra State governor vowed to enforce the rule of law strictly, with no exceptions for public officials.

“The rule of law will be fiercely upheld, and adherence to it will be sacrosanct for both government officials and citizens alike, strictly in accordance with our constitutional frameworks,” he said.

Obi also promised to run a government that respects opposition parties and allows them to contribute meaningfully to national discourse.

“Our democracy will exemplify true governance of the people, by the people and for the people, completely free from interference by the ruling party. Instead, we will institutionalise deep respect for opposition parties and foster constructive engagement in governance.”

He said his administration would pursue democracy “with integrity, fairness and transparency.”

Obi expressed confidence that the partnership with Kwankwaso would drive national renewal and economic transformation.

“I hereby accept my affirmation and nominate Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as my Vice President,” he said.
