New York City is implementing unprecedented security measures ahead of game three of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden (MSG) to accommodate President Donald Trump’s visit, US authorities announced Monday.
The move marks a significant shift from previous games, with a sprawling security perimeter now in place around the Manhattan venue above Penn Station, where six people were wounded in a stabbing late Sunday.
Authorities have barred watch parties outside MSG for supporters without tickets, a break from the jubilant scenes seen during the past two Finals games. NYPD Chief Michael LiPetri said hundreds of officers will be stationed at the transit hub but added that the deployment “will not change in light of the incident yesterday.”
The New York Knicks face the San Antonio Spurs in the best-of-seven series, with game three tipped off Monday and game four scheduled for Wednesday. Fans holding tickets have been instructed to arrive at least two hours before the 8:30 pm tip-off to pass through airport-style security scanners.
“The message is simple: celebrate the Knicks, but avoid the MSG area tonight if you do not have tickets for the game or some other valid reason to be there tonight,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
The Secret Service will collaborate with local authorities to ensure the president’s safety.
“These visible security measures are designed to provide both protection and reassurance to everyone attending the NBA finals,” Special Agent Matt McCool explained at a press briefing.
The combined security effort aims to balance public safety with the excitement of one of the league’s most anticipated matchups, ensuring fans and officials alike can focus on the game while protecting the city from potential threats.
Fans are advised to plan their journeys carefully, respect all security protocols, and anticipate heavier-than-usual crowds across Manhattan during the high-profile event.
