Four suspected cult members have been arrested by operatives of the Kwara State Police Command during an operation in Ijagbo, Oyun Local Government Area of the state.
The Command’s spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, disclosed this in a statement released on Sunday, saying the operation was part of ongoing efforts to curb cult-related violence and other criminal activities in the state.
According to her, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) carried out the raid on Thursday after acting on intelligence about suspected cultists and violent criminals operating in the area. She said one suspect, Idowu Akorede, identified as the alleged Capon of the outlawed Eiye Confraternity, was arrested at a hideout in Ijagbo.
The police said preliminary investigations linked the suspects to robbery and other violent crimes in the area.
“The group has been linked to incidents in which residents were reportedly attacked and dispossessed of their valuables in broad daylight, thereby creating fear and insecurity within the community,” the statement said.
It added that the suspects allegedly resisted arrest and attacked operatives during the operation.
“Upon sighting the operatives, the suspects reportedly resisted arrest and launched an attack on the officers with broken bottles in a bid to evade capture. The operatives, however, exercised restraint, professionalism, and tactical superiority in subduing the suspects and taking them into custody without injury,” the police said.

The Command confirmed that the suspects have been transferred to Ilorin for further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to arrest other members of the group.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, commended the operatives for their professionalism and urged residents to continue supporting security agencies. He further reassured residents of the Command’s unwavering determination to confront all forms of criminality and ensure the safety of lives and property across the State.
The police also called on members of the public to provide timely and credible information to assist ongoing security operations.
