Rising floodwaters in parts of Lagos have forced the Oworonshoki Transmission Substation to shut down after inundating critical power infrastructure.

The development was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the spokesperson of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Ndidi Mbah.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, hereby declares force majeure on Oworonshoki 132/33kV and Lekki 330/132kV Transmission Substations as a result of flooding caused by continuous rainfall in Lagos,” Mbah said.

She explained that while the Lekki 132kV Transmission Substation remains operational, the Oworonshoki substation has been shut down after floodwaters damaged key equipment.

“Although Lekki 132kV Transmission Substation is still in service as water is continuously being pumped out of the station, Oworonshoki Transmission Substation, on the other hand, is presently not in service as the level of water has affected two power transformers, TR1-60MVA and TR3-30MVA that tripped on no load even after attempted restoration,” she added.

According to TCN, the flooding has also submerged the protection and control cables connected to the affected transformers, complicating restoration efforts.

Mbah said engineers are working to evacuate the floodwater to enable testing and restoration of the transformers.

She also apologised for the inconvenience caused to customers of the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko DisCo) who are supplied through the affected transmission substation.
