A fire broke out at the Bono Energy Terminal in the Coconut area of Apapa, Lagos State, on Friday afternoon, causing panic among workers and nearby residents.

Videos and images shared by eyewitnesses on social media showed thick plumes of smoke billowing into the sky as flames spread through parts of the fuel terminal. Workers at the facility and residents in the surrounding area were seen fleeing to safety as the fire intensified.

The fire heightened fears of a major disaster in the densely populated industrial hub, prompting emergency calls to fire services to contain the blaze and prevent its spread to nearby facilities.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were deployed to the scene and were battling to bring the fire under control.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Shakiru Amodu, said firefighters had been mobilised to the affected terminal.

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently curbing a fire explosion at Bono Energy Terminal on Apapa-Oworonshoki Expressway, by Coconut, Olodi Apapa, Lagos. Update to follow,” Amodu said in a text message sent to journalists on Friday.

As of the time of publication, authorities had yet to issue a comprehensive report on the incident.

The cause of the fire had not been determined, while there was no official information on casualties or the extent of damage caused by the blaze.
