The Delta State Police Command has arraigned 30 of the 202 suspects arrested during an intelligence-led raid on criminal hideouts, brothels and suspected drug dens across Asaba and neighbouring communities.

The suspects were arrested during an operation carried out on Saturday by officers led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Department of Operations.

According to the police, the raid followed credible intelligence gathered by the State Intelligence Department (SID).

The command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said that investigations into the suspects had been concluded, with 172 of those arrested released after police found no evidence linking them to any offence.

Edafe said one of those arraigned was 63-year-old Prince Chizoba Ojokwu, identified as the proprietor of Prince Tarvan 50 Brothel.

Ojokwu was charged before an Asaba Magistrate’s Court for allegedly allowing his premises to be used as a brothel and procuring women and girls for prostitution.

“One of the suspects, Prince Chizoba Ojokwu, 63 years, proprietor of Prince Tarvan 50 Brothel, was arraigned before the Asaba Magisterial District for allegedly permitting his premises to be used as a brothel and procuring women and girls for prostitution, offences punishable under Sections 224 and 223 respectively of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. C21, Vol. I, Laws of Delta State of Nigeria, 2006,” the statement read.

Edafe added that the remaining 29 suspects were arraigned for conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace and possession of illicit drugs.

He added that 172 suspects were screened and released unconditionally after preliminary investigations concluded.

The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, said the command would continue to ensure that arrests made during intelligence-led operations are backed by thorough investigations before prosecution.

Oyeniyi also warned operators of criminal hideouts and other illegal establishments to desist from activities that threaten public safety.
