The Presidency has said the recent commendation letter from United States (US) President Donald Trump to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu reflects the growing success of Nigeria’s security partnership with the US.
The Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, made the assertion during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday.
Bwala said attention should focus on the substance of the letter rather than the timing of its public release, describing it as international recognition of the Nigerian Government’s efforts to strengthen security cooperation with the United States.
He said the collaboration has produced tangible results, including improved intelligence sharing, joint military operations and specialised training for Nigerian security personnel.
According to him, the enhanced partnership contributed to the elimination of a senior ISIS commander and the disruption of planned terrorist attacks in Nigeria.
Bwala added that the letter reflects the progress made in bilateral relations and said similar diplomatic gains are being recorded with other countries.
Responding to questions over why the Presidency released the July 6 letter on July 22, he dismissed concerns about the timing, insisting that the contents of the correspondence were more important.
He maintained that the letter serves as further evidence of the progress being made in tackling insecurity and strengthening Nigeria’s international partnerships.
The Presidency had on Tuesday released the letter in which President Trump commended President Tinubu’s leadership in combating terrorism and protecting vulnerable communities while reaffirming the importance of stronger relations between the United States and Nigeria.
The letter also revealed the two countries’ expanding security partnership under the 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap, including intelligence sharing, joint counter-terrorism operations and the deployment of U.S. Special Operations Forces to train Nigerian troops.
