NBA and FIBA form Basketball Africa League

The NBA and FIBA have announced a 12-team basketball league for Africa that will begin in January 2020.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, said the Basketball Africa League (BAL) will have a play-in structure which will see teams having to qualify to play in the league, and only two teams per country can qualify.

Former American President Barack Obama, who is an avid basketball fan, is expected to have hands-on involvement with league as well.

Toronto Raptors forward OG Anunoby, whose parents are from Nigeria, and Hornets center Bismack Biyombo of the Democratic Republic of Congo, were among the players who attended the NBA All-Star Africa luncheon Saturday, where the announcement was made.
