Elumelu Offers to Power Every Delta Home

Nigerian billionaire Tony Elumelu on Monday offered to partner with Delta State to deliver electricity to “the last room” across the oil-rich southern state, as he declared the region safe for investment at the opening of a state economic summit.

Speaking at the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit in Asaba, the chairman of Transcorp Group said his company was ready to collaborate with the state government to make electricity generation and distribution “affordable and possible” for every household.

“Mr. Governor, we would like to discuss with you to see how we can help or partner with you, with Delta State, to make electricity generation and distribution to the last room in Delta State affordable and possible,” Elumelu told delegates.

The businessman said improved power supply would help “truly create employment, alleviate poverty, and industrialise our state.”

Elumelu, who is also chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA), Heirs Holdings and founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, noted that his group was already active in power generation and distribution.

“As a group, we’re into power generation and power distribution. Everything we discuss here needs to be powered. We need to provide electricity to make sure it works,” he said.

Elumelu also praised Delta State’s investment climate, telling delegates the state was “very safe, safe for investment, hospitable, and very receptive to people.”
