The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has urged motorists to avoid excessive speeding after a female driver died in a lone vehicle crash along the Mongoro-Ile Zik corridor in Lagos.
The agency said the crash occurred over the weekend when the driver of a Toyota Sienna lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road, and crashed into a roadside building.
In a statement issued by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, the agency said the impact of the collision killed the driver instantly.
“Security investigations revealed that the deceased, who was driving a Toyota Sienna (LND 162 HB), lost control of the vehicle which subsequently veered off the carriageway and violently rammed into a roadside building. The ferocity of the impact proved catastrophic, resulting in her instantaneous death,” the statement said.
The agency said the victim was the only occupant of the vehicle.
LASTMA officers on routine patrol were said to have responded immediately to the incident, securing the crash scene and managing traffic to prevent gridlock and secondary accidents.
According to the statement, officials deployed safety cones to cordon off the affected section of the road while directing traffic until the evacuation was completed.
Although the crash temporarily disrupted traffic, the agency said its personnel’s prompt intervention restored normal vehicular movement within a short time.
Security operatives from the Afonka Police Post under the Shasha Divisional Police Headquarters also provided support during the emergency response.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the crash as a tragic reminder of the dangers of speeding and reckless driving.
“Every journey must be undertaken with prudence, patience and an unwavering commitment to established traffic regulations. No destination is worth the ultimate sacrifice of human life,” he said.
“Excessive speed remains one of the foremost causes of fatal road traffic crashes and motorists must, at all times, exercise the highest degree of caution, restraint and responsibility while behind the wheel.”
Bakare-Oki also advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey.
He said drivers should immediately stop using any vehicle showing signs of mechanical defects until it has been professionally repaired.
The agency extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and urged all road users to comply with traffic regulations to help prevent avoidable road crashes.
