Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) threatened on Tuesday to declare force majeure and completely halt operations at the Zawiya refinery if ongoing drone attacks persist.

The warning followed a third strike over Sunday and Monday that targeted an oil blending and filling plant near crucial storage tanks and domestic distribution pipelines.

While authorities reported no casualties or structural damage from Tuesday’s incident, no group has claimed responsibility for the escalating strikes on the country’s primary oil complex.

The repeated bombardments severely damaged key infrastructure at the 120,000-barrel-per-day facility, Libya’s largest operating refinery.

On Monday, a direct strike hit a storage reservoir containing 4.5 million litres of gasoline, igniting a massive blaze that caused the structure to collapse entirely.

Emergency crews treated several individuals for smoke inhalation while firefighters worked to cool adjacent tanks and prevent further explosions.

In response to the crisis, the NOC declared an extreme state of emergency and demanded an immediate official investigation.

Libya’s House of Representatives parliamentary panel strongly condemned the criminal targeting of vital national infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah met with security officials and armed group leaders in Tripoli, vowing firm action against any forces threatening key economic installations.
