The United Nations Security Council welcomed a historic agreement between Libya’s rival political factions on Tuesday, establishing a clear pathway toward holding national elections within two years.

Factions signed the UN-backed deal in Tripoli on August 30 to unite the deeply divided nation and restore democratic governance.

French Permanent Representative Jerome Bonnafont, currently presiding over the council, commended the agreement as a vital milestone toward free, fair, and transparent elections.

Council members urged all Libyan leaders and domestic stakeholders to support and execute the new political roadmap fully.

The Security Council also reaffirmed its complete backing for Hanna Tetteh, the UN Special Representative for Libya, as she oversees the implementation process.

The roadmap focuses on updating Libya’s electoral laws, merging its competing executive branches, and fostering comprehensive political dialogue across all regions.

The breakthrough agreement aims to end years of political paralysis following the 2011 NATO-backed overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi.

Power currently remains split between the UN-recognised government of Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah in Tripoli and the eastern-based administration backed by military commander Khalifa Haftar.

UN officials hope the structured process will finally stabilise the oil-rich North African nation and consolidate its governance under unified national institutions.
