The United States Mission in Nigeria confirmed on Monday that shifting routine visa processing to Lagos will not affect the operational status of the US Embassy in Abuja.
Starting August 1, 2026, the US Department of State will transfer routine visa services to regional hubs, but the diplomatic post in Abuja will remain fully open for non-visa operations.

The Department of State explained that this continental restructuring aims to enhance security, standardise applicant vetting, and boost administrative efficiency across multiple African posts.
Under the new regional framework, nonimmigrant and immigrant visa applicants must schedule their appointments and pay processing fees at designated hubs, including Lagos.
Officials confirmed that current valid visas remain unaffected.
However, applicants who previously paid fees for appointments in Abuja must schedule their interviews by July 31 to prevent fee forfeiture.
Eligible applicants may still complete required medical examinations with authorised local physicians or at designated regional hubs.
